Phytomenadione

Available Forms:
ampule
10mg/1mL x 1 mL x 100's

Dosage, Frequency and Route:
Neonatal hemorrhage 0.5-1 mg IM immediately after birth, may be repeated if the mother has received anticonvulsant drug; 1-5 mg IM to mother 12-24 hr before delivery.

Adult Anticoagulant Therapy 5-10 mg IM, up to 20 mg.

Action:
Anti-coagulant

Anticoagulant-induced prothrombin deficiency; prophylaxis & therapy of hemorrhagic disease of the newborn & it may also given to the mother before delivery; hypoprothrombinemia due to oral antibacterial therapy; hypoprothrombinemia.

Side Effects:
Allergic reactions, including anaphylactoid reaction, pain, swelling & tenderness at injection site. Brain damage, hemolytic anemia, hemoglobinuria, hyperbilirubinemia

Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity, severe hepatic disease, last few weeks of pregnqancy

Nursing Considerations:
• Monitor prothrombin time during treatment.
• Assess nutritional satus.
• Assess for bleeding or bruising: hematuria, black tarry stools, hematemesis
• Teach patient not to take other supplements unless directed by prescriber
• Teach patient necessary foods in Vit K to be included in diet.
• Advise patient to avoid IM inj., hard toothbrush, flossing until treatment is terminated.
